AFRO CUBAN QUARTET
Percussionist Pedrito Martinez’s Afro-Cuban quartet makes a much anticipated Florida debut on Saturday April 14th. The New York Times review called his sound “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.”
Miami audiences will recognize the base in Cuban guanguancó and classic rumba, and the bata rhythms of santeria. As a young musician in Havana, Pedrito was a member of the legendary rumba group Los Munequitos de Matanzas. Based in New York since 1998, he was a founding member of the groundbreaking AfroLatino supergroup Yerba Buena.
With his own quartet, he can now work with some of the city’s top Latin musicians, and bring his AfroCuban roots into new realms.
